The Food and Drug Administration has received an order from a pharmaceutical company to change the packaging of the drug Viagra, known generically as sildenafil, sold under the brand name Cialis, by the end of the month.
The FDA has said the drug is “potent” in its effect on the male sexual characteristics of men. It was not clear what dosage to use.
Cialis was approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 1998 and is the brand name for the medicine tadalafil.
“The FDA’s orders from this pharmaceutical company do not meet the requirements for obtaining final approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration,” said Mick Foy, director of regulatory affairs for the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
Tadalafil, which is also marketed under the brand name Cialis, has not been approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
In a statement, the FDA said that the drug is “worth” $2 billion to $3 billion in revenue each year. That’s a record for a drug.
“We have long sought approval of Cialis for the treatment of erectile dysfunction,” said Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler, the agency’s director of health. “With the approval of the drug we have the opportunity to continue working with pharmaceutical companies to bring the medicine to market.”
Cialis is available in tablets of 2.5, 5 and 10 mg and as an over-the-counter drug.
The FDA said that Cialis is still approved for use in men in need of sexual stimulation. Viagra was approved for use in its initial formulation.
A spokesman for Pfizer said, “Pfizer is pleased with the FDA’s decision and will update product information and packaging as needed.”
Cialis is still widely available.
A total of 27 million prescriptions for Cialis were written in the United States in 2019, according to data from the National Institute of Mental Health. The drug is used in men with a family history of erectile dysfunction, as well as men who have recently stopped taking antidepressants or bipolar disorder.
